Once the great mosque of the Umayyad Caliphate, it was converted into a Catholic cathedral in 1236. The Forest of Columns

The most unforgettable feature of the Mezquita is its vast main hall. Here, a forest of 856 columns made of jasper, onyx, marble, and granite supports the roof. These columns, salvaged from Roman and Visigothic ruins, are topped with unique double arches of alternating red brick and white stone voussoirs—an ingenious solution by the original architects in 785 AD to create a sense of height and grandeur.

As you walk through the seemingly endless rows, the perspective shifts, creating a mesmerizing optical illusion. This space was expanded over two centuries by successive caliphs, yet it retains a powerful sense of unity. In the 16th century, the center of this hall was controversially removed to build a soaring Renaissance cathedral nave, creating the unique hybrid monument we see today.
